Annual Enrollment runs October 15 to December 7. Here's what to review before you keep or change your plan.
Every fall, people with Medicare get a chance to review their coverage and make changes for the coming year. Plans update their premiums, drug lists and provider networks annually, so the plan that worked last year may not be the best fit now.
1. Read your Annual Notice of Change
Your current plan mails this notice by September 30. It lists any changes to costs, covered drugs and network doctors for next year. Keep it handy when you compare options.
2. List your doctors and prescriptions
Write down every doctor you see and every medication you take, including dosage. A licensed agent can check each one against the plans available in your ZIP code.
3. Compare total yearly cost
Look beyond the monthly premium. Add deductibles, copays and expected drug costs to see what you would actually pay over the year.
The lowest premium isn't always the lowest total cost. Compare the whole picture.
4. Decide before December 7
Changes made during Annual Enrollment take effect January 1. If you miss the window, your options to switch are limited until the next enrollment period.
